All tutors at International Music School Cardiff are hand-picked, highly trained professional musicians with an enthusiasm for teaching their instrument. Lessons take place in our city-centre venue, and it is our vision to create a place where music tuition of the highest quality is delivered alongside regular professional concerts and public performance opportunities for our students.

What should you expect from percussion lessons?

Whether its the xylophone, glockenspiel, shaker, bongo or snare drum, you’re sure to find a percussion instrument to suit you! One of the most versatile instrument families, it also happens to be one of the most fun! Most ensembles require some form of percussion so you’re guaranteed to find somewhere to play outside of lessons – which can be tailored specifically to the pupil’s individual interests and instrumental/style preferences.

Percussion is used in countries all around the world, and at the IMS we can teach you about many of these different styles such as: Latin, African, jazz, Classical and samba. You could choose to specify mainly in one aspect or study all for a well-rounded musical experience. If you were to choose Classical/orchestral percussion, you would be encouraged to go down the graded exam route. If you wanted to study all these genres we could change genre on a termly basis.

Playing percussion involves using many different parts of your brain as you have to think mathematically and creatively at the same time, whilst multitasking by thinking about what instrument you are about to play next.
